Running A Business And Balancing Family

Business + Balance

It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely always worth it!

One of the most common questions I get asked is how the heck do I balance it all?!

Short answer: I don’t.

Inevitably something goes to the wayside and Mom guilt creeps in daily. Like now for instance, the boys are watching TV while I work on some blogs. I start thinking I really should work later, but then I remind myself we were just outside playing and they need chill time too. So I’m going to push that thought aside and keep typing. I know I am a good mom and 30 mins of TV isn’t going to hurt them.

But, back to the point, I don’t balance it all. My husband helps a lot. My laundry is always in a state of chaos and my hair hasn’t been washed in 3 days. But, my website is coming along great. Right now, aside from kids, that and jewelry production are our focus.

Some things I do implement that help with the balance are the following:

  • Work when my kids sleep. We work most nights of the week when the kids go to bed. We stick to an early bedtime so we aren’t up later than we already are.
  • I work in all the little mom cracks of the day. I quickly respond to emails and DMs when I can so they don’t pile up.
  • Prioritize. I try to focus on the have tos and let the other things go.
  • Keep my home tidy, but lets be real- it’s not always clean. When my to do list starts getting longer, my anxiety creeps up big time if my house is also getting out of control. So I do my best to keep my house tidy. It’s one way that I can keep calm when business life is boiling over.
  • Set timelines and goals. Right now as I am writing this, we are preparing for launch and are getting Mother’s Day orders out. I know I only have a few weeks left of this marathon so it helps me be less overwhelmed when I know the end is in sight. The laundry mountain as we fondly refer to it is not a priority right now as we can just as easily grab clean clothes from the folding table as we can the closet, but I know in a few weeks I will have time to deal with it. That brings me peace in busy seasons.
  • Communicate with your partner. Discuss what the schedule looks like and find ways to support each other even if it’s something out of your normal roles. My husband has completely taken over shipping and is a huge support in that way. He has gladly stepped up to help out. I couldn’t do this without a supportive partner.
  • Take breaks. Right now it feels like the last thing I can afford is a break, but your jewelry is too important for me to be burnt out. Last night I went to bed early and recharged so that I can continue to give each piece all the attention it deserves. I refuse to work on any piece until I am fully focused because they matter that much to me.

So, if you are a Mama and business owner, I hope these tips help you achieve some balance with the realization you can’t balance it all. And to find peace with knowing that’s okay! And, also, these are principles I apply to Mom Life in general so I hope even if you aren’t running a business, this can be valuable to you as well!

Motherhood Products We’re Swooning Over

As a Mama, one of the most helpful things to me is to find products I know will be great. There is so much to choose from and it's hard to know what is the best. I love recommendations from other Mamas that can give feedback and real life experience with using them. So, all of the products linked are ones that I have tried myself and I know are great, or have come highly recommended.
